Discriminatory taxation stifles competition and hurts all consumers

Because of the tax, cable companies that face competition from satellite providers are free to raise their rates by 5.5 percent—the amount of tax—without suffering any competitive disadvantage. Cable has no incentive to reduce prices, improve service and quality, and offer more programming.
